Negative Influences of the Media

We have to accept that to quite a large extent our lives are strongly influenced by the media. We are surrounded by the media in the form of newspapers, magazines, the TV, and the internet.

We live in an age of information, and can readily obtain any amount of information on virtually any subject by logging on to any computer search engine and requesting the information. Home entertainment systems provide easy access to movies and soap operas on TV. Most of the time there is no harm and many of the media presentations are socially acceptable. Are there then any negative influences of the media?

There is no doubt that the media influences the behavior of society either consciously or at the subliminal level. Young people especially are susceptible to the negative influences of the media in that they will often try to copy their latest celebrity. They will seldom give a thought to the correctness of the behavior of their role model but will tend to copy blindly.

The media are always ready to seize upon the negative aspects of life and allow them to become the daily headlines. This may be seen as making the public aware of such negative occurrences, but the persistent obsession with negative things passes on a negative feeling to society in general, which generates feelings of doom, gloom, and despair.

The products often advertised by the media can often have a negative influence; our healthy eating habits can be altered by the continual exhortations to buy this or that junk food especially the young who have grown up in this electronic age.

There are many ways the media can exert a negative influence on young minds, and with an ever increasing reliance on digital learning processes and communication, we will become a society having no power of self reliance or the ability to think independently in our decision making
